In the wake of the disaster, Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ mobilized a medical team and headed towards the affected areas early on Saturday. The Prime Minister’s Office posted on social media about the incident, expressing deep sorrow over the human and material damage caused by the earthquake.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences over the loss of lives and damage caused by the quake, assuring that India is ready to extend all possible assistance.

Casualties and Injuries

The earthquake claimed the lives of at least 140 people, with 80 fatalities reported in the Jajarkot and Rukum districts. Over 140 people sustained injuries. Four hospitals in the country, including Bheri Hospital, Kohalpur Medical College, Nepalgunj military hospital, and Police Hospital, have been dedicated to treating the earthquake-affected. Some injured persons are also receiving treatment at the Surkhet District Hospital.

All helicopter operators have been instructed to be on standby to assist in airlifting the injured from the affected areas. Regular flight operations have been suspended to facilitate this. Ambulances have been stationed at Nepalgunj Airport and military barrack helipad. The Prime Minister has instructed all security agencies, including the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force, to immediately carry out rescue and relief works.

Impact and Aftermath

The western districts of Nepal, Jajarkot and Rukum, were the worst hit. Several buildings and structures are now in rubble, and roads have been blocked and bridges damaged, obstructing rescue and relief efforts. The earthquake, with an epicentre in Jajarkot district, was felt in some states of neighbouring India, including the national capital, New Delhi.

Geological Context

Nepal lies on a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate pushes up into the Eurasian plate, leading to the formation of the Himalayas. Earthquakes are a regular occurrence in this Himalayan nation due to this geological activity.
