Miraculous or Moisture? Virgin Mary Statue's Tears Captivate Mexican Town Amidst Rising Violence

In the town of El Canal, Colima, Mexico, a statue of the Virgin Mary has become the center of attention as it appears to shed tears, sparking widespread fascination and prompting hundreds to travel to the church to witness what some consider a miraculous event.

Videos circulating on social media depict small water droplets streaming down the statue's face, creating a spectacle that has captured the community's imagination. Witnesses claim the redness around the Virgin Mary's eyes supports the belief that the tears are genuine.

Local resident Victor Ramos, attributing the phenomenon to the high levels of violence in Colima, remarked, "We can associate it with... the violence rates that are being experienced here in the state of Colima, also here in the community."

Colima has earned the dubious distinction of being the most dangerous city in Mexico for six consecutive years, with the region experiencing a concerning number of intentional homicides. The US government has issued advisories against travel to Colima due to widespread crime, including violent incidents and kidnappings.

Amid concerns about the city's safety, some visitors hope for divine intervention, seeking peace from the Virgin Mary in the face of rampant gang violence. Maria Mercedes Hernandez expressed her wish for "peace in Colima and throughout the world."

However, skepticism remains, with Professor Luigi Garlaschelli suggesting that the statue's porous materials could absorb water, creating the appearance of tears. Similar incidents involving statues seemingly weeping have been reported in the past, raising questions about the authenticity of such occurrences.

Whether viewed as a divine manifestation or a natural phenomenon, the 'crying' Virgin Mary in El Canal continues to draw crowds and ignite discussions about faith, miracles, and the challenges faced by the community in Colima.
